The 2023-24 Kentucky Basketball schedule is now finalized with the latest announcement regarding the exhibition season. The school has confirmed that it will host Georgetown College on October 27th, followed by a game against Kentucky State on November 2nd. While we now know the teams Kentucky will face, the specific game times and TV channel details are yet to be decided.
The game against Kentucky State holds special significance as it is the 2023 iteration of the Unity Series. In recent seasons, the Wildcats have participated in a regular-season contest against a historically black college and university (HBCU). The intention behind these games is twofold: they work to elevate the mission of HBCUs and help in fundraising efforts to offer more opportunities for students of these institutions. During the partnership’s initial two years, both the Wildcats and their competing HBCU teams embarked on educational field trips, like visiting the National Underground Railroad Freedom Museum in Cincinnati. Moreover, they’ve received resources for branding in the new name-image-likeness era, benefited from career center aids, and have had the chance to attend joint dinners at John Calipari’s radio show.
For the Wildcats, exhibition games have historically been successful. Boasting a commendable record, Kentucky stands at 150-12 in all-time exhibition matches. They’ve enjoyed a continuous victory streak in 29 consecutive games, a figure bolstered by their 4-0 performance in Toronto over the summer. Specifically, under Coach Calipari, the Wildcats have a remarkable 47-1 record in exhibition plays.
This year’s face-off against Georgetown College isn’t a first. It marks the fourth occasion the two teams are clashing in an exhibition game. They initially met back in 2005 when the Wildcats clinched an 85-63 victory. Under Calipari’s tenure, this will be the third time the Tigers have been invited to Rupp Arena. Reflecting on the past, they previously played against each other in 2019, with Kentucky securing an 80-53 win. Going further back, before their 2005 game, their last encounter in a regular season was in 1938.
Additionally, Kentucky has a track record of welcoming the Thorobreds for exhibition matches. This year will be the second in a row for such a meetup. The Wildcats have previously played against Kentucky State in 2015, 2019, and 2022, maintaining an undefeated record of 3-0 against them.
